AA Science Fiction(Chloe Wong)

Light of the Portal

Xena was bleak, cold and desolate. Decades had passed since the great battle between Xena and Zendor, but the wreckage and misery of the war remained on Xena. Sometimes, Marrow thought that she could still hear the eerie battle cries echo from the ancient ruins on the battlefield. The are sunlight made the whole planet seem dark and cold. Marrow never believed how glorious and beautiful Xena had been. Marrow kicked at the dirt with her feet, bored and restless. Marrow's young spirit desired for the thrill of adventure and exploration.
At the corner of her eye, a glint of light shined from the deep, black mud. The light seemed to dance around in the dirt as she walked cautiously but curiously towards the glinting object. Strangely shaped, it appeared to be the only item shining in Xena. Turning and flipping it with her fingers, she studied it. The light of the dim sun seemed to bounce off every side of the object, making it shiny. This must be the science concept "Reflection of Light". This unusual item had to be a "prism" just as in her mother's stories. On the spur of a moment, just as the beam of light bounced off the surface, a blinding light flashed right in front of Marrow. She remembered her mother telling her tales of how explorers stepped into something called a "portal" and went into other planets, dimensions and universes. She did not know where the portal would take her, but she was burning her curiosity. " Well, anywhere should be better than Xena," Marrow convinced herself, shrugging. Inhaling, Marrow stepped, toe first, into the strange portal.
Marrow was greeted by sounds of vehicles rushing across the road and the chattering of what seemed like people. There were buildings, trees, playgrounds, and parks everywhere. It was clearly paradise. " Where is this?" Marrow wondered, " Could this be Earth?" Her mother had always told her fantasies on how beautiful Earth was. This paradise had to be Earth, the most beautiful place that Marrow had ever seen before. She should be in the heart of the city; there was so much here.  Her heart was racing with excitement. She could feel herself smiling from ear to ear as she browsed and explored every shop. She read the books in the library, visited the parks and playgrounds. The world seemed to different on Earth. There were so many things that even her mother's tales had never mentioned. They were all so appealing to Marrow; she couldn't believe how much she had been missing all this while.
Suddenly, her stomach let out a rumble. Marrow missed her mother's cooking and longed for the taste of home. As her fingers crept into her jacket pocket, she felt the familiar, hard but smooth surface of the "prism". The " prism" brought her to Earth; it would bring her back to Xena. She had wanted to explore, and she got what she wanted. However, what did she want now? She played with the prism between her fingers again. As if forcing her to make a choice, the light danced off the prism, reopening the portal. Earth? Xena? " Where?" Minutes passed, and she made her painstaking choice...

The pest problem by Reiner

Jane, Tim and John were listening to a heated debate on an issue in a

parliament which was the ‘best’ debate in the book of Guinness world record. In

the heat of the argument, they went back to a memory that was very hard to be

erased from the mind.

The alleyway laid before them.It was a little narrow, just wide enough for a

Trio to walk through. It smell of rotting meat and there were the sights of a

cockroach land.“Urgh, this is so smelly!I feel like vomiting! And there are so many

cockroaches!” exclaimed Jane as she held her breath. She was walking with her

colleagues, Tim and John, to work. They love to do science work, especially

biology. They were on the way to work.John then suggested that they should kill

the cockroaches. Why not? After all, it was a significant issue which was

discussed in parliament many times before, and they had nothing to lose. And so

the trio begins on the project.

Well, easier said than done. They needed the resources and money to find

a way to kill them. Also, the poison that kills them should not be able to be

adaptable by the cockroaches. They had to find a way to get their ‘target’.The

only advantage was that they had only Tim, also known as the guy with a big

brain. In a few months, the cockroaches were all dead. The president announced

that three mysterious persons did the town a great service. But little did they know

that a disaster was coming.A few months later, small animals like ants were seen

looking for cockroach land and were dying.Gradually, it moved on the frogs and

grasshoppers and finally, the animals which people depend on for a livelihood,

were dying. The situation was grave. The president called for several meeting. The

news spoke about them for days, weeks, months!John was very sorry about the

whole thing.He suggested,”How about breeding them?”Jane replied

hotly,”Hey!You want to breed cockroaches?!The last time, you killed them

all!Now you want to breed them!I bet that the situation will go out of hand!”

Gradually, they began to argue.Tim stopped them.”Follow his idea.I will help to

regulate their breeding.”Jane nodded, not very convinced.

They begin to find the solution.Tim had to find a dead cockroach while

John helped with carrying the technical stuff. As for Jane, let just say she was a

couch potato. The extr.action of the deoxyribonucleic acid was the most tedious

thing to do in science, to say the least. They had to spin the blood to separate it

into the different components. They also had to find a perfect one to pair with

it.However the odds, they finally to breed two of them.

The president happened to pass by.He took a photo and personally sent them an

email to them to come to the city hall.He took a medal of honour, presented it to

them and he gave them an exclusive job to work in the government.Jane, Tim

and John were given a lesson that they learnt: never think that a pest is bad.

When I was a child, I well remember doing something should not have done. Across my house lived a family of three. The two parents were friendly, but their child was the most annoying of all children. One day, he broke my toy. I felt my fists clenching up, face turning red, trying ever so hard to contain my rage. Obviously, I could not. I slapped him on the back, and he instantly burst into tears.

Just at that moment, my mother walked by. She dragged me away with her vicious grasp and roared at me to go to my room and get into bed. I begged her to let me off just this once, but apparently, she refused. I reluctantly dragged myself to the bedroom. The room was eerily quiet. It smelt like it did this morning - smelly. It was going to be boring. I tucked myself into bed.

I woke up in the dark and felt something lurking in the shadows. It crept towards me with quiet steps and patted me on the back. My heart pounded, perspiration trickling down my cheeks.

I woke up with the sun glaring into my eyes. I was still slightly shaken from last night. To this day, I still do not know who that was.

When I was a child, I well remember the time when I received my first device, the iPad. I was thrilled on the night I received the cool device. However, I was only allowed to play with the device the next day. I came back from school with a sense of excitement and hurried to my mum's room to grab it. But, there was a little, evil human using it already. My baby sister. My mum told me gently that I had to share it with her. Annoyed, I sat beside her. I wanted to watch my own show but she was watching a boring “ABC” song.

Due to my poor anger management, I pushed her off my mum’s bed. She fell with a loud thud and my mum came in screaming her head off. She shrieked at me commanding me to go into my room.

I told her ok and grabbed the iPad and scurried to my room but my mum was too quick. She snatched the iPad out of my arms as I passed her. I whined and stomped my feet and ran into my room punching my pillow with fury. I stared at the ceiling with tears in my eyes. I fell into a dose as my anger slowly faded into sleepiness.

I woke up in the middle of the night when I felt a slight push on my right arm. I woke up and tried to see past the darkness but my eyes could not adjust my eyes could not quick enough and gave up when a reassuring arm laid on my leg. I slept uneasily afraid that the lovely spell could be broken.

The next morning, when i recalled what happened, I was puzzled and curious. But being young and afraid, I did not say anything and I still do not know who laid that arm on me that night.

When I was young,I well remembered trying to be an adult by drinking beer.I would open the fridge and take out a bottle of beer and pour it on the glass. When my mom saw that, she would drag me to the bedroom.Although I tried to resist, she still managed to drag me there.
In the room,I changed as slow as possible while caculating the hours till I could wake up.My face turn pale."15 hours!"The room was filled with the light from the sun and I felt that the sun was teasing me.The sound of cars and motorcycles filled the air.Slowly but surely,I fell into a deep sleep.
When I woke up,its was already pitch dark to the point where you cannot see five metres in front of you.I felt a hand touch me.It was rough and felt familiar. It was a silihoutte.I felt comforted and went back to sleep within minutes.
The second time I woke up,birds were chirping cheerfully in the branches.Till this day, this mysterious figure had no resemblance to anyone in my mind.

When I was a child, I well remember a naughty thing I had done. It was in the afternoon, the Sun up high and shining mercilessly at my house. I was with my sister. I remember I always carried a teddy bear around. My sister pinched me. A teddy bear, brown with a red tie, was flung at her. She ducked to a side. It reached the statue of a god and was on a burned josstick. My mother stormed to me and sent me to sleep. I cried and dropped flat on the floor. I did not know how to beg.

I was carried into my room, thrown onto my bed. I stopped crying. The soft fluffy item softening my feelings. I lazed there and did nothing. There were many limitations for a young child, this was one. I tossed and turned. I could hear my mother scolding my sister from outside. The room was of a dull yellow colour. I slowly fell into a deep slumber...

When I woke up with a startle, it was dark. It must have been midnight already. A shadowy and gloomy figure appeared beside my bed.gifIt was holding my hands. I did not dare move. Soon, I fell asleep again.

It was in the morning the next time I woke up. It was bright and shining. My thoughts went back to the mysterious figure that appeared in the night. Was it a dream? Or was it real? Who was it? Till now, I still do not know.

When I was a child, I well remember the cheeky toddler I was. It was an early afternoon; the sun rays creeping into my room. I drew the curtains and switched on the lights. Boredom seemed to be constantly tapping on my shoulders. Being the mischievous boy I was, I immediately came up with a ridiculous idea. I hurled all the old remote controls out of my window.

Just then, my mother walked in.

"Calvin, get down the bed now and continue sleeping!"

I woke up in the middle of the night. Darkness flooded the room mercilessly. It was frightening. I hid under my blanket and shut my eyes.

Finally, the morning came gracefully with its sun rays creeping over the window.
