Advertisement Analysis

Image

The image depicts a man smoking, however, as he smokes, he is disappearing into smoke. The part in which he is disappearing is turning greyish-black, which show how he is being burnt even as he lights the cigarette and starts smoking, which show how smoking can burn you from the inside and eventually kill you.

Colours

There are two sides of the person who is smoking, the normal, skin-colour side and the greyish ash side. This shows the contrast in which the person is slowly transforming from a normal person into a person addicted to smoking and is dying because of it. The background of the poster is black, which is a negative colour and shows the harm smoking can bring you.

Words

The are not many words on this poster. Only the words “you fade away with every puff” can be found, which shows that smoking will gradually cause death, as life will gradually fade away. This also fits into the context of smoking fading away after time, which says that both the smoke and the life will fade away.

Typographical Features

In the words “you fade away with every puff”, the words “every puff” is faded which adds even more emphasis on the fact that life will fade away with smoking. The font is also bolded, which creates a bigger impact.

Layout

The image of the man smoking is put in the middle of the poster which guides readers to which part to look at first. Normally, people will look at any picture first, as such is the human instinct not to look at words, much less a picture in the middle. When they see how much the smoking man is enjoying himself, non-smokers will be horrified and will not start smoking. Then, people will look to the next eye-drawing feature of the poster, the words “you fade away with every puff”. When smokers see how they must have looked when smoking, and see that they will die earlier due to their compulsive habit, they might stop smoking or at least try to stop.

PACC

  • Purpose: The purpose of this poster is to stop smokers from smoking and also to discourage non-smokers from smoking.
  • Audience: The general public, but especially smokers.
  • Context: Since smokers are commonly seen smoking in public, they will see the poster, which will stop them from smoking as they will see the health implications such as lung cancer, and will stop smoking. Also, non-smokers will also know that lung cancer is caused by smoking, and will not smoke.
  • Culture: Seeing drifts of smoke is commonly linked with smoking, thus it fits the culture that people will fade away into smoke, which is what is produced, with every puff.

Yeo Jia Hao Calvin S1-04 (Visual Text Analysis): Hitler vs. Charlie C.

Image
The image shows a simplistically-stylised art of Adolf Hitler, the infamous notorious dictator, and Charlie Chaplin, a comedian who rose to fame in the era of silent films. Both of their iconic mustaches and hair are very similar.

Linguistic Features
The short and sweet sentence of "It's the hat." suggests that the hats produced by Hut Weber have a great impact on how an individual looks like just by wearing their hats.

Textual Features
Small text using the Arial font gives a feeling of gentlemanliness, formality, and superiority of the buyer when he puts on Hut Weber's hat.

Typographical Features
The tiny size of the sentence 'It's the hat.' can be taken as Hut Weber trying to say that small differences have obvious and noticeable outcomes.
Layout
Hitler's face is placed on the left side and Charlie C.'s face is placed on the right side. This may be intentional by the Hut Weber marketing team as the word "left" has a negative connotation as it is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft, meaning "weak". The right side is the 'right' side. (Pun intended) 'It's the hat.' placed underneath Charlie C. implies that the hat made the dictator into the comedian. Placing the Hut Weber company logo on the right was a 'righteous' decision. (Sorry for the puns)

Colour
The choice of having only two colours is very smart of the Hut Weber marketing team. This type of simplicity accompanied with the abstract art of the two popular faces and the decision of blackish-brown on what seems to be old paper further accentuates the idea of the company keeping to its own original design and style.

PACC
Purpose: To persuade people to purchase their 'identity-changing' hats.
Audience: Individuals who love to express their character and personality through their choice fashion, especially headwear.
Context: It causes viewers of the advertisement to think about how powerful Hut Weber's hats are, hats that are the thin line between tragedy and comedy.
Culture: Image's art style suits 'contemporary art', which is what the youngsters are familiar and comfortable with today.

Lucas Tan (Poster Analysis)

This is an image of the Hulk using a Band Aid plaster on his index finger.

As many people know, the Hulk is incredibly strong. This poster shows that someone even as strong as the Hulk uses their Band Aid plaster, and therefore is implying that their plasters have good quality, are strong and are the best. Even though this poster does not have any text, it still carries out the main message that their plasters are good.

The Hulk's hand is the main image in the poster, and the plaster is also very contrasting to the Hulk's skin colour, therefore making it quite noticeable. This is trying to show off their plaster, and that it is good enough to help even someone like the Hulk.

Purpose: The purpose of this poster is to promote the Band Aid's plasters.
Audience: Almost everyone who is looking to buy plasters.
Context: It makes people want to buy their product.
Culture: The product is something that everyone uses and it is trying to say that theirs is the best of all of them.

Image: This is an image of a Nike sneaker with a wooden background and the two captions with a pair of scissors and a dotted line separating the two captions.

Linguistic features: This poster says that "some kids wear it" and "some kids make it". This shows that child labour is being used to make these shoes and while some fortunate children can wear it, less fortunate ones make it.

Textual features: The captions of the poster are in capital letters and have also been bolded, this is to draw the readers attention to the two statements  and raise awareness of child labour used in major companies such as the sports shoe manufacturer Nike.

Typographical features: One of the less subtle elements of this poster is that there is a pair of scissors and a dotted line that separates the statements"some kids wear it." and "some kids make it." This signifies that to most people, the statement that"some kids make it" has been "cut off" from their knowledge and companies are trying to prevent people becoming aware of it.

Layout: The Nike shoe image is placed in the centre of the poster to focus attention on to the message and meaning of the shoe, this allows readers to look at the picture first. The captions are placed right below the shoe and as the only words elaboration is in the statements. This allows the hidden and frontal message to be conveyed effectively.

P.urpose: The purpose of this poster is to raise awareness of child labour.
A.udience: Customers of Nike and other sports shoes
C.ontext: It causes people to think about where and how they get their products.
C.ulture: The picture is of a well-known brand and is more relatable to others.
