Source:wonderopolis.org/wonder/why-cant-dogs-eat-chocolate

What I did:I always wondered why dogs cannot eat chocolates and if they eat them they would die. To find out the answer to my question I decided to read up about it on the internet.

Summary:
The chocolates that we eat contains theobromine which is potentially toxic to the dogs. Theobromine is an alkalied that acts as a stimulant like caffeine does. Dogs, however, do not have a specific enzyme that humans use to break down theobromine. Thus, the theobromine can overstimulate the central nervous and cordiovascular system in dogs, causing them to have increased blood pressure, vomitting, dehydration, abdominal pains, seizures and even death. But the size and the breed of dog matters in the amount of theobromine it needs to reach the toxic level.

What I did:

I wanted to know more about nature and animals. So, I went to Science Daily to search for articles related to animals when I found this interesting article about a wasp rediscovered after many years.

Summary:

This rediscovered wasp was last found 101 years ago. The wasp feeds on the wood - boring beetle. This wood- boring beetle feeds on the black lotus tree which provides strong wood. This beetle was considered a serious pest that discouraged the planting of the black lotus plant. This also played an important role in American history. Thus the wasp will now allow the plantation of black lotus.

June week 3

Date: 25/6/16    3:43pm

Source:
http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/health/nurses-make-house-calls-at-click-of-mouse

What I did: I was looking through The Straight's Times website

                   online

Summary: Caregivers can call for a nurse to go to their house to
help with caring for their loved ones instead of going to
the hospital, which is unnecessary when there is no
                  emergency.

What I learned:

New words:     Jaga- means "to guard" in Malay.

About the article: This is one of the best solutions for caregivers to reduce stress when caring for their
loved ones, and also helps save time in hospitals when caregivers do not know
what to do. The nurses can easily travel to their houses at the press of a button and
help to care for the patient. Not only can they help in caring for the patient (like
changing their tubes or something), they can also do a checkup at the same time.
                             This really helps a lot.

What I did: I was looking through The Straight's Times website

                   online

Summary: Man gets 6-years jail for parang attack

What I learned:

Not everything needs to be revenged. After finding out that his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend cheated on her, he lured him to a warehouse and slashed him with a parang, causing him to get cuts, a fractured skull and his intestines spill out of his abdominal wound. Not everyone deserves to be slashed to this extent, even if they cheated on their ex. Revenge is really scary.

                   online

Summary: Cleaners Zaidah, 41, and her boyfriend, Zaini Jamari, 46, were convicted of three charges of child abuse and one count each of causing grievous hurt.

What I learned:

People can be really harsh on others. It is really very cold-hearted. I hope that people will not learn from them and repeat the same mistakes. It is already bad enough for people to abuse animals, but now this? The boy died! How I wish the couple could have been charged for murder, not because I hate them or because they killed, but because they caused suffering to the poor child. I just cannot stand his suffering and leave it lying there. Is there no justice for these kind of people?

What I did: I was looking through The Straight's Times website
                   online

Summary: construction firms can pay lower levies for
experienced foreign workers trained in safety, in a
move to encourage bosses to send lower-skilled
                  workers for courses.

What I learned:

New words: Levies- meaning tax

From the article: Singapore is trying to lower the death toll caused by deaths of construction workers.
I feel that this is great. People are paying more attention to the safety of others. It
can even make the world a better place.

http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/south-asia/body-of-man-who-died-while-watching-horror-film-the-conjuring-2-goes-missing-report

What I did: I was looking through The Straight's Times website
                   online

Summary: A 65-year old man died of suspected heart attack while
watching The Conjuring 2. His friend brought him to a
hospital where he was declared dead. The man's body
and his friend both disappeared when his friend brought
him to another hospital for an autopsy.

What I learned:

Do not go to a movie that you do not dare to watch. It is really scary how that man died at the movie. Furthermore, he and his friend both "mysteriously" disappeared. Though, I suspect that his friend killed him and disappeared with the body to get away. However, I will not jump to conclusions. Let us all wait for the reports.
